1968-75 – Cuba’s America department, DA, set up a network for the channelling of weapons and supplies to the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

23 Dec 1972 – A 6.2 earthquake in Managua, 12,000 people were killed.

1979 – Revolution.

1979 – The Sandinistas in 1979 initiated armed subversion against its neighbours. The result of a Communist central America could be millions of refugees and Communists in the US. In March 1979 Castro decided Nicaragua was ready for a Communist revolution. Internal political opposition to Somoza and the Carter administration’s passivity to three recent Communist takeovers, in Ethiopia, Afghanistan and Granada. In April 1979 the Sandanistas, over the next years Mexico provided $600 million and full active political support to the Sandinista regime. The Sandinista guerrillas expanded from about 500 in early 1979 to about 6,000 six months later. On 23 June 1979 the OAS voted to end diplomatic recognition of the Somoza government and transfer to the exiled coalition of Communist Sandinistas. Sandinistas a terrorist group. (Inside the NSC. 12 July 1979 – In negotiations with the Carter state dept, the Sandinistas sent the OAS a written assurance that they would set up a Democracy in Nicaragua. So the OAS removed Somoza. The Sandanista led govt took over on 19 July 1979. By Sept 1979 the Sandinistas were forging military and political links to the Soviet Union and Cuba. 1983 – Oliver North was assigned the Nicaraguan armed resistance. The CIA ops directorate had management for the, then legal, US efforts to support the armed resistance in Nicaragua. Oliver North had close relations with that group. (Inside the NSC. ©1988 C Menges).

1984-85 – Iran Contra. Nicaragua Contras and the leftist Sandinistas Daniel Ortega. Saudi Arabia prince Bandar gave $1 million a month to the Contras from mid 1984. End Sept 1985 – At the end of Sept 1985 the administration got $27 million in non military aid for the Nicaraguan armed resistance, from the US Congress. End of 1986 – C-123 transport plane, Miami Southern Air Transport. Shot down in Niacaragua. Pilot William Cooper and co pilot Walllace Buzz Sawyer. Cargo kicker Eugene Hasenfus. Sept 1986 – James Atwood CIA and an arms dealer. Gerhard Mertins was a German Nazi, weapons to the Nicaraguan Contras as part of the Iran Contra deals. 1988-89 – ETA paid its members in Nicaragua who were sent to help the Sandinistas via Larreategui Luadra, a Basque gang, banknotes were hidden between pages of magazines and sent by post. In Nicaragua ETA salaries were $20 a month until 1989 rising to $100, after the payment of the ransom of Emiliano Revilla, a businessman who was kidnapped in 1988, which brought in about $13.5 million.

1993 – During Ortega’s earlier regime, Nicaragua issued passports to international terrorists, to ease their movement across borders. Five of these turned up in the hands of one suspect, arrested in 1993 following the first attack on the US World Trade centre. WTC.

31 May 1996 – AID worker abduction. Former Contra guerrillas kidnapped a US employee of the Agency for international development AID. Who was assisting with elections in rural northern Nicaragua. She was released unharmed the next day, after members of the international commission overseeing, intervened.

2003-2009 - Shell company Panama. Nicaraguan pres Arnoldo Aleman. Nicstate and other shell companies $100 million. Alema was jailed for 20 years. Money laundering and corruption in 2003. 29 Sept 2004 – al Qaeda terrorist Adnam el Shukrijumah, aged 29, crossed into Honduras illegally from Nicaragua, to meet the Mara Salvatrucha gang leaders in Honduras.

4 Nov 2006 – Daniel Ortega and his brother Humberto paid official state visits to North Korea. Seeking assistance and formal relations. Also the PM of Iran visited Nicaragua, expressing solidarity from the Ayatollah for the Sandinista Communists.
